Applying to UK universities through UCAS (2027 entry)
Almost all UK undergraduate applications go through UCAS. The system is straightforward once you know the deadlines, the new three-question personal statement and how many choices you get.
The basics for 2027 entry (checked 9 October 2026)
- You apply once through UCAS and can choose up to five courses (up to six if applying to conservatoires), according to UCAS.
- UCAS states the application fee for the 2027 cycle is £34.50, covering all your choices.
- Your application includes personal details, education and predicted grades, any employment or volunteering, your personal statement and a reference, usually from your school.
- If you are at school in the UAE, your school counsellor normally manages the reference and sends the application. Ask about your school's internal deadline, which is often weeks before the UCAS deadline.
Key dates for 2027 entry
- 15 October 2026, 18:00 UK time: deadline for Oxford, Cambridge, and most medicine, dentistry and veterinary courses (Imperial College London's 2027 entry page). In the UAE that is 21:00, because the UK is still on summer time (GMT+1) and the UAE is GMT+4.
- 13 January 2027, 18:00 UK time: the 'equal consideration' deadline for most other courses (Imperial and Keele, 2027 entry). In the UAE that is 22:00, because the UK is on GMT in January.
- 25 February 2027: UCAS Extra opens, for applicants who have used all five choices and hold no offers (Keele, 2027 entry).
- 30 June 2027, 18:00 UK time: applications received after this go into Clearing; Clearing opens on 2 July 2027 (Keele, 2027 entry).
- Universities may still accept applications after 13 January, but they are not obliged to give them equal consideration. Aim to submit well before the deadline.
The personal statement: three questions
- Since 2026 entry, UCAS has replaced the single free-text statement with three questions. Question 1: 'Why do you want to study this course or subject?'
- Question 2: 'How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare for this course or subject?'
- Question 3: 'What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?'
- UCAS says the total limit is 4,000 characters including spaces, with at least 350 characters for each answer. You can split the rest as suits your course and experience.
- UCAS advises: do not just repeat your grades (universities already see them), avoid quotes and clichés, never copy, and expect several drafts. Admissions staff read the three answers as one document, so avoid repeating yourself.
- One statement goes to all five choices, so choose closely related courses. A statement for Medicine will not persuade a Law admissions tutor.
Writing strong answers
- For Question 1, explain what sparked your interest and what you have explored beyond the syllabus: a book, a podcast, a project, a lecture, a competition.
- For Question 2, link your current subjects to the course. Example: 'A level Chemistry taught me to plan and evaluate practical work, which I used in my extended project on water desalination.'
- For Question 3, use volunteering, work, responsibilities at home, clubs or hobbies, and always say what you learned and why it helps on the course.
- Use a simple formula for each example: what you did, what you learned, and how it connects to the course.
- Be honest and do not exaggerate. UCAS warns that you may be asked to say more about anything you write at interview, and could be caught out.
Offers and what happens next
- Universities reply with a conditional offer (you must meet conditions such as grades or an English score), an unconditional offer, or an unsuccessful decision.
- Once you have your decisions, you can hold up to two offers: a firm choice and, if your firm is conditional, an insurance choice. Your insurance should normally have lower or more achievable conditions.
- UCAS sets a reply deadline. A guide published in April 2026 lists 2 June 2027 for applicants who have all decisions by 12 May 2027, and says offers are declined automatically if you do not reply. Always check the date shown in your own UCAS account.
- Lesson 7 covers choosing between offers in more detail.
Practise in real life
Tick each one off when you have done it.
- Write a one-line answer to each of the three UCAS questions for a course you are considering. Then expand one into 350 characters and count with a character counter.
- Put the UCAS deadline that applies to you, and your school's internal deadline, into your phone calendar with reminders two weeks and two days before.
- List five courses you might apply for and check that one personal statement could honestly fit all of them.
Remember
- 2027 entry: up to five choices, £34.50 fee, apply through UCAS.
- 15 October 2026 for Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine, dentistry and veterinary courses; 13 January 2027 for most others, both at 18:00 UK time.
- The personal statement is three questions, 4,000 characters in total, at least 350 each.
- You hold a firm and, if needed, an insurance offer.
Note: Dates checked on 9 October 2026 for 2027 entry. The 15 October and 13 January deadlines come from university pages (Imperial, Keele) because the UCAS dates page could not be loaded; the 2 June 2027 reply date comes from a private tutoring company's guide, so confirm all dates in your UCAS account. UAE times are calculated by us. Rules can change for 2028 entry.
