Car insurance and registration renewal in the UAE

Every year a UAE car needs valid insurance, a passed inspection where required and a renewed registration card (Mulkiya). Missing a step can leave you driving illegally without realising. This lesson is the practical renewal routine.

Insurance: the minimum and the choice

  • Gulf News (March 2026) says car insurance is mandatory for all registered vehicles in the UAE, and third-party liability cover is the minimum for registration and renewal.
  • Third-party cover pays for damage and injuries you cause to others and related legal costs; it does not pay to repair your own car.
  • Comprehensive cover adds protection for your own car, typically including theft, vandalism and flood or storm damage (Gulf News).
  • Comprehensive policies usually have a deductible (excess): the amount you pay yourself before the insurer pays. Compare it as carefully as the price.
  • For how insurance works in general, see the Money Basics lesson on insurance.

Reading a policy before you buy

  • Check who is allowed to drive: some policies name drivers or restrict young or newly licensed drivers. Tell the insurer about every regular driver.
  • Check whether roadside assistance, a replacement car and cover in neighbouring countries are included or extra.
  • Gulf News notes that claims may be reduced or denied if authorities had warned people not to drive in hazardous conditions, such as storms.
  • Make sure the policy start date and length cover the whole registration period you are renewing for (CarSwitch, June 2026).
  • Get at least three quotes and compare the same level of cover, not just the headline price.

Renewing registration (Dubai example)

  • CarSwitch (June 2026) reports that most private used cars in Dubai have a one-year registration and that you can start renewing up to 30 days before expiry.
  • The car must pass a technical inspection at an RTA-authorised testing centre where required; checks include brakes, emissions, steering, lights, tyres, body and window tint.
  • Unpaid traffic fines from any emirate, toll account problems, finance holds and some accident cases can block renewal (CarSwitch).
  • Renewal can be done through the RTA website or app when insurance and inspection are linked, at RTA service centres, or through authorised typing centres.
  • Other emirates have their own authorities and rules; check the official site for your emirate.

Your renewal routine

  • Six weeks before expiry: check the registration and insurance expiry dates and put them in your calendar with reminders.
  • Four weeks before: get insurance quotes and check for any unpaid fines or toll balance.
  • Three weeks before: book and pass the inspection if required; fix any failed items quickly.
  • Then renew online or at a centre and save a digital copy of the new registration and insurance in a secure folder.
  • Never drive with expired registration or insurance; you would be uninsured if something happened.

Practise in real life

Tick each one off when you have done it.

  • Find the registration and insurance expiry dates of a family car and put reminders in a calendar six weeks ahead.
  • Read a real car insurance policy summary with a parent and list who is covered to drive and what the excess is.
  • Check the official RTA or police app for your emirate to see how fines and renewal are shown.

Remember

  • Third-party cover is the UAE legal minimum; comprehensive also covers your own car.
  • Check named drivers, excess and extras before buying.
  • Insurance must cover the full registration period.
  • Unpaid fines can block renewal: check early.
Note: Registration details come from CarSwitch (a car marketplace, June 2026) because we could not load RTA pages directly; confirm current rules, fees and inspection requirements on rta.ae or your emirate's licensing authority. We have not quoted fees or fines. Insurance details are from Gulf News (March 2026). Policy terms vary between insurers, so always read your own policy.
