Boats, kayaks, paddleboards and jet skis
Being on the water rather than in it brings its own risks: wind, weather, speed and other boats. The right kit and a little planning keep a fun day out from turning into a rescue.
Life jackets and buoyancy aids
- The RNLI explains that a buoyancy aid is foam that helps you float but is not designed to turn you the right way up; it suits competent swimmers who expect to go in the water.
- A level 150 lifejacket should turn an unconscious person on to their back (RNLI).
- The RNLI rates buoyancy aids at level 50 for sheltered water with help close by, and lifejackets at level 100 for calm water and 150 for coastal and offshore use.
- Fit check: lift a buoyancy aid by the shoulders; it should not move (RNLI). For a lifejacket, fasten the crotch straps or it may float up over your head.
- The RNLI's bottom line: a lifejacket can only save you if you are wearing it.
Boat trips in the UAE
- The Dubai Maritime Authority's Boating Safety Guide says an approved life jacket must be provided for every person on board.
- The same guide says children under 10 must wear life jackets at all times while sailing.
- It lists excessive speed and alcohol as the two main causes of recreational boat accidents, and warns against overloading.
- Before sailing, check the weather report; low, dark clouds can signal a storm (Dubai Maritime Authority).
- Marine emergency numbers in the guide: 999 (Dubai Police operations) and 996 (coastguard operations).
Kayaks and paddleboards
- The RNLI advises always using a paddleboard leash, so you stay attached to the board, which is your biggest float.
- Wear a suitable buoyancy aid and carry a phone in a waterproof pouch on your body (RNLI).
- Avoid offshore winds: the RNLI warns they can quickly blow a paddleboard far out to sea, and tells kayakers to watch wind strength, especially offshore winds.
- Check the forecast and tide times, and tell someone on land where you are going and when you will be back (RNLI).
- If you capsize in a kayak and need help, stay with it: the RNLI says it makes you a bigger target for rescuers. Practise self-rescue in calm water first.
Jet skis in Dubai
- Gulf News (2026), citing RTA rules, reports that the driver of a jet ski must be at least 16 unless accompanied by a guardian or qualified coach.
- Life jackets must be worn at all times, and riding is allowed only in designated zones (Gulf News, citing official sources).
- Dubai Maritime City Authority has told jet ski and boat users to keep 300 metres from the beach, stay out of swimming areas and check the weather before going out.
- Gulf News reports fines of Dh1,000 for not wearing a life jacket or helmet and for riding outside designated areas.
- Rent only from licensed operators and ask them to show you the permitted zone on a map.
Weather and planning
- Conditions can change quickly; the RNLI notes that choppy water is much harder, especially for beginners.
- Dubai Maritime City Authority advises carrying an emergency contact list and reporting any accident or hazard.
- Never go out on any craft after alcohol, and never overload it.
- If the wind picks up or you feel tired, head back early. Turning round is a skill, not a failure.
Practise in real life
Tick each one off when you have done it.
- Next time you go on a boat, kayak or board, do the shoulder-lift fit check on your buoyancy aid before you set off.
- Write a short 'float plan' text to a family member: where you are going, who with, and when you will be back.
Remember
- Wear the life jacket; do not just bring it.
- Leash on, phone in a waterproof pouch, buoyancy aid on.
- Avoid offshore winds and check the forecast.
- In Dubai, jet skis only in designated zones, from licensed operators.
