Passports and Emirates ID: validity and renewal

Most document problems are not lost passports but expired ones, discovered the week before a flight. A few dates and rules, checked early, prevent nearly all of them.

The six-month habit

  • Many countries require your passport to be valid for some time after you arrive, not just on the day you travel.
  • For example, the UK government's travel advice says that to enter the UAE as a visitor, your passport must have an expiry date at least 6 months after the date you arrive.
  • The same advice says UAE residence permit holders need at least 3 months of validity after arrival.
  • Rules differ by country and change, so check the official entry requirements for every country on your trip, including transit stops.
  • A simple habit: set a calendar reminder 12 months before your passport expires, and start the renewal then.

Renewing an Emirati passport

  • u.ae says citizens aged 21 and over receive a passport valid for 10 years (or until the pages run out, whichever is earlier); citizens under 21 receive a passport valid for 5 years.
  • Applications are made through ICP (Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security) eServices, the UAEICP app, customer happiness centres for special cases, or airport counters in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah for emergencies only.
  • You need a recent photo with a white background that meets ICAO standards, unless ICP already holds a recent photo you choose to reuse.
  • u.ae states you can renew up to six months before expiry; however, Aletihad, citing the official news agency WAM, reported in August 2025 that ICP extended the window to one year before expiry from 18 August 2025.
  • Citizens abroad can request a renewal through the UAEICP app and digital channels and choose delivery to a UAE embassy or consulate where they live, according to u.ae.

Renewing your Emirates ID

  • u.ae says you can renew your Emirates ID as early as six months before it expires, or after it expires.
  • If you renew more than one month after expiry, u.ae says a late fee of AED 20 per day is charged, up to a maximum of AED 1,000 (checked October 2026).
  • Renewal is through ICP's service centres or its smart services (website and UAEICP app).
  • Anyone aged 15 or older must complete fingerprint and signature procedures at ICP service centres, according to u.ae.
  • For residents, the Emirates ID is linked to your residence status, so renew both on time and follow your sponsor's or university's instructions.

Other nationalities: how to find the right process

  • Your passport is issued by your own country, so the only reliable instructions are on your government's official passport website or your embassy's website.
  • Example: GOV.UK says renewing a UK adult passport costs 102 pounds online or 115.50 pounds on a paper form (checked October 2026).
  • GOV.UK warns: do not book travel until you have a valid passport, because your new passport will have a different number from your old one.
  • A new passport number matters: airline bookings, visas and online accounts (such as a UK eVisa) may need updating with the new details.
  • If you hold two nationalities, track both passports and know which one each visa or residence permit is linked to.

A renewal checklist

  • Check the expiry dates of your passport, ID card and any visa today, and write them in your calendar with a reminder 12 months and 6 months before.
  • Find the official renewal page for your passport and bookmark it; avoid third-party 'agents' that charge extra.
  • Have a compliant photo ready and know the photo rules (background colour, no glasses glare, neutral expression).
  • Apply well before exam season or summer travel, when offices are busiest.
  • When the new document arrives, update every account and booking that used the old number, and scan the new photo page into your document folder.

Practise in real life

Tick each one off when you have done it.

  • Check the expiry date on your passport and ID card and calculate whether your passport will still have 6 months' validity after your next planned trip.
  • Find and bookmark the official passport renewal page for your nationality, and note the current fee and photo rules.
  • Set two calendar reminders for each document: 12 months and 6 months before expiry.

Remember

  • Many countries need months of passport validity after you arrive, so renew early.
  • Emiratis renew through ICP channels; check the current renewal window on ICP or u.ae.
  • Emirates ID late renewal can bring daily fees, so renew on time.
  • A renewed passport has a new number: update visas, bookings and accounts.
Note: Sources disagree on the Emirati passport renewal window: u.ae says six months before expiry, while Aletihad (citing WAM, August 2025) reports ICP extended it to one year from 18 August 2025. Check ICP's own channels for the current rule. Fees and entry requirements change; figures were checked in October 2026.
